One of the biggest questions heading into SummerSlam was which match would be main eventing night one of the two night premium live event. It could be the Undisputed WWE Title match between Cody Rhodes and CM Punk or the Hell in a Cell Match between Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar. It seems a mere hours before the show, WWE will be going with the more unconventional option.
According to PWInsider, WWE has internally slated the Hell in a Cell match as the main event of night one of SummerSlam. That means that the match between Femi and Lesnar will be closing out SummerSlam on Saturday night.
This certainly is a fascinating decision as many people believe the match between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes could have been a WrestleMania main event which made people automatically believe it would of course main event at SummerSlam. Especially with it being for the companies number one belt and there is no title on the line in the Hell in a Cell Match.
This is the third time Lesnar and Femi are wrestling each other this year. It all started when they were the opening match to night two of WrestleMania 42. Femi defeated Lesnar in just under five minutes and the end of the match made it seem like Brock Lesnar was retiring from in ring competition. Then a couple weeks later, Lesnar returned and they had a second match in May at Clash in Italy in which Lesnar got the victory.
Lesnar then went off television again while Femi won the King of the Ring which would have guaranteed him a World Title match of his choosing. But Lesnar returned once again and Femi gave up his World Title match at SummerSlam to face Lesnar for a third time to complete the trilogy.
Another major factor on why WWE is choosing this to main event the show is that Lesnar is from Minnesota which is where SummerSlam is taking place. There has been speculation that this could be Lesnar’s actual final match but Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select reported that one of there sources told them that they don’t expect this to be his last match but could see him taking time off before WrestleMania season hits.
