Vince McMahon Never Worried The Undertaker Would Jump Ship To WCW

The Undertaker’s long career saw him spend the bulk of it working for the WWE. He found his greatest success with the company, and became great friends with Chairman Vince McMahon.

Before that, of course, was a maligned run in WCW as Mean Mark Callous where he never quite got the heights and success he found in WWE. On a recent Something To Wrestle with Bruce Prichard podcast, Prichard talked about how Vince McMahon was never really concerned about The Undertaker leaving the WWE.

The Monday Night Wars saw many talents jump to WCW for bigger money deals, including some of Vince’s top stars like Bret Hart, Lex Luger, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash. All of them followed the money Ted Turner started throwing out after signing Hulk Hogan in the hopes of creating true competition for Vince McMahon. While Turner had the money, WWE’s financial state wasn’t the greatest, also helping WCW steal away top stars.

Prichard said that even if they had the money, WCW wouldn’t have known what to do with Mark Callaway. With them being unable to use The Undertaker gimmick, it could’ve been a reversion to his Mean Mark gimmick, which would have been counterproductive.

“I was confident that Undertaker was a WWE lifer. I believe that Vince was so confident that Undertaker was a WWE lifer. It was just timing and I don’t know that WCW would know what the hell to do with him. You take him out of the gimmick and you go back to Mean Mark and I truly believe that the Undertaker was such a strong character that you wanted to keep that aura. You wanted to keep that mystery. You wanted to make sure that’s what the audience wanted. I think that’s what everybody wanted.”

Undertaker remained loyal to Vince McMahon through it all, and even with his Final Farewell, he seems ready to be there should Vince McMahon ever need him again.
