Mark Henry Credits Bret Hart With Helping Him Navigate Backstage Issues Early In His Career
Mark Henry has been the kind of guy to have seen and done it all in the WWE. Thanks to a long career where the WWE did quite a bit to invest in him, Henry had a lot of experiences both good and bad due to inexperience when he first began.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Henry opened up about a particular one that may not have ended well for him. While not disclosing names, Henry talked about backstage cliques in the WWE at the time of it, the middle to late 90s. Henry also revealed that Bret Hart may have been the one to save his career by helping him out when he needed it the most.
“The WWE has had success with me, but they also made some mistakes, throwing me to the wolves. It ended up with me making threats against ‘top guys’ and then those ‘top guys’ going ‘look it’s me or him.’”
“There was a lot of cliques and individual mafias where guys…they all stood up for their own group of guys. When I had trouble with one? I had trouble with all of them. And I didn’t mind, I was like ‘bring it outside.’ And they’re like, ‘man, are you crazy!?’ ‘Yeah that’s right, I am crazy!’ and it didn’t help me.”
It took Henry taking a trip to Calgary to visit Bret Hart’s school that helped him out, which he wound up talking about as well.
“So, Bret was opening up a school in Calgary, and Vince knew about that. Vince talked to Bret about having me come there for a while and letting the smoke clear, because at that time? I had dropped a nuclear bomb.”
“I got to Canada. Bret was like ‘hey man, you seem like a good dude. I know what happened to you, let’s fix it, because I think that it’s over for you, if I can’t fix you.’ It was just that.”
Considering Henry went on to have a pretty successful career, it might be safe to say Henry got the help he needed from Bret Hart.
