When Retribution began, the group’s identities were masked and obscured as WWE creative scrambled to pick talent who would eventually be part of the faction. When they inevitably settled on talent, they had the former Shane Thorne, Dio Maddin, Dominik Dijakovic, Mia Yim, and Mercedes Martinez behind the masks before Mustafa Ali took leadership.
One week, without any explanation, the character Martinez portrayed was missing from segments and no explanation was given. Martinez’s removal is a pretty interesting reason according to Fightful Select.
The word among talent is that Mercedes Martinez extended her desire to no longer be a part of the angle and was removed from the group before they all signed new contracts.
The takeaway from this is that Martinez has seemingly asked out of the angle, which has to be a curious thing for fans to wonder about. It will leave a lot of people wondering why and if she saw something in advance others didn’t. There is no plan to replace her in the faction. It has been reported that other names were “briefly tossed around” as a potential replacement, but they decided to keep Yim/Reckoning as the only female in the group.
