Jon Anik Says He’d Change UFC By Shortening Events And Cutting Fighters
Jon Anik is the lead man on UFC broadcasts and he has an idea.
What Should Change In UFC?
UFC, like many other promotions and entertainment entities, gets a lot of disgruntlement from fans wanting things to change and be the way they specifically want to see it. But, something a lot of fans do agree on is that the UFC events are just too long. Usually events have ranged from 5PM on the east coast, all the way until 1AM. Around eight hours of UFC programming each Saturday, and a lot of that time is filled with talking.
Now, UFC commentator and lead analyst, Jon Anik, recently sat down with the Spinning Backfist Show and was asked what he would change about UFC. Jon says he would definitely change the length of shows, shortening them and thus also lowering the amount of fights on the card from 15 to around 10. But with that, he says he’d also have to cut around 150 fighters from the roster because it’s oversaturated.
”I think our biggest challenge is the fact that our events are way too long. And we should have 10 or 11 fights instead of 15. And even if you want to make this broadcast five or six hours, and Hunter I love you, even if you wanted to make this five or six hours instead of eight, I’d be okay with it. But, we ask a lot of our fans, even fans as rabid as yourselves, eight hours times 41 Saturday’s, right? So if I could affect change in one way, it would be to, and we have a lot of masters to serve, right? Television partners in different countries, a lot of different things, a roster north of 600, getting 50 fighters signed on the contender series year, which I think is less than ideal. But, if I could affect change in one way, and perhaps it’s selfish because I’m a broadcaster that doesn’t understand how we do back to back Super Bowl’s every time we crack a mic, I would just, I would cut 150 fighters off the roster, I would do 10 fights a card and just make it a much more ingestible, palatable sporting event.”
Despite cutting a deep amount of fighters, I think this is a very fan-friendly change. Will it happen? Only time will tell, but it seems very favorable for the viewers and even the broadcasters, it seems. You can watch the full interview below.
