Vergil Ortiz Filed Lawsuit Against Golden Boy To End Contract With Promotion
Vergil Ortiz is done with Golden Boy.
Lawsuit Filed
Vergil Ortiz is heading into one of his most important fights, and that’s in the courtroom. On Thursday, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of Ortiz in Nevada that requests termination of his contract with Golden Boy Promotions. Ring Magazine first broke the news that Vergil, who’s been with the promotion since 2016, wants out.
Oscar De La Hoya, who heads Golden Boy Promotions, signed a three year extension with Vergil in May of 2024. But, Vergil wants out. According to Gregory M. Smith, the lawyer of Ortiz, it’s cited that “declaratory relief, breach of contract and interference with [prospective] economic advantage” are grounds for terminating the contract.
Ortiz is looking to end his contract with Golden Boy and enter into conversation about a highly-anticipated bout with Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, a fight that many have been clamoring for as the two continue to dominate their respective opponents.
Alongside the lawsuit, Oscar De La Hoya and Vergil’s manager Rick Mirigian have continue to go back and forth on social media, regarding how the negotiations for a potential fight with Ennis should be handled. Oscar has threatened legal action against Rick for entertaining other promoters to get the fight done. Ortiz’ lawsuit does mention “history of substance abuse” as it pertains to De La Hoya.
The lawsuit also states that the end of Golden Boy’s exclusive content partnership with DAZN affords Ortiz the right to void his promotional contract. The deal ended December 31, but according to the lawsuit, the company is negotiating another deal with DAZN to provide content in 2026 and 2027. The lawsuit also notes that DAZN executives made it clear that they will not accepted Vergil vs. anyone else other than Ennis, next.
Golden Boy Promotions has released a statement that reads: “We are aware of the lawsuit. Unfortunately, Vergil is getting bad advice from his lawyer and manager who have repeatedly violated the contract. We will aggressively defend this lawsuit and enforce our rights. We are confident a judge will agree that our contract is valid and Vergil and his team are in breach.”
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez also was awarded termination of his contract with Golden Boy Promotions back in 2020. Despite the lawsuit yesterday, the WBC Interim Champion, Vergil Ortiz, seemed to be in good spirits as he was in Texas to attend TNA Wrestling’s debut on AMC TV.
