Road To The Title Episode 8

We have reached the final episode of UFC BJJ: Road To The Title. Today, in the Welterweight division, Team Gabriel’s #2 seed Andy Varela battles Team Musumeci’s #3 seed Davis Asare. Then, in the last Lightweight semi-final, we have another all Team Musumeci matchup with #8 Issac Doederlein battling #4 Carlos Henrique.

Issac Doederlein vs. Carlos Henrique kicked us off. In the first round, Carlos tried to pick the ankle and get a takedown right away, but Issac sat down and tried to pull guard. Both men started to go for foot locks, but Carlos sat up out of it and broke the holds. Carlos took side control and transitioned into north-south while continuously working towards a leg lock. Both stood up and Issac was able to get an immediate takedown. The two scramble to end the round, with Issac getting an arm lock at the last second but couldn’t finish it.

In round two, they both went back to the ground right away with Carlos getting top control in a very awkward position. Carlos has his legs wrapped around Isaac’s head, but was able to transition into an arm-bar. Isaac didn’t tap, but instead got his arm dislocated and the match was called. He admits after that he should’ve tapped. Following the match, Issac Doederlein was stretchered out.

While we did get an update that Issac’s arm was just dislocated, no fracture and no break, he is now out. Carlos Henrique advances to the finals and will take on Danilo Moreira to crown the first ever UFC BJJ Lightweight Champion. Both men are team Musumeci.

Team Gabriel’s #2 seed Andy Varela takes Team Musumeci’s #3 seed Davis Asare now. In round one, Davis immediately jumps on him and pulls Andy down into guard. Andy was talking to him the whole time, complimenting him in a condescending way. Davis was looking for a triangle, but Andy was able to slip out. Davis continued to look for it, but Andy stood up and they got back on the feet to end the round.

In round two, Davis had the same game plan and pulled Andy down into guard right away. This time, Andy continued to scramble and look for a way ti grab a submission of his own. Davis did a good job at grabbing Andy’s wrist and controlling it so he was struggling to grab a hold. With time winding down, Andy got back to his feet and tried to find a good way to get in, but he couldn’t and we head to the final round.

In round three, Andy’s corner was telling him that he was losing and needed to really push the pace and bully Davis. When the round began, the two were hand fighting to kick things off, but, Davis was able to pull guard and take Andy down to the mat again. This time, Andy grabbed the leg and tried for a foot lock, but Davis was able to roll out. Andy was able to snatch the neck when he got Davis in turtle and locked in an anaconda for the tap in a comeback win. “He always tries super hard, then breaks.” Andy said as he celebrated.

  • Andy Varela def. Davis Asare via Submission (Anaconda Choke, Round Three)

Andy Varela now advances to the finals and will battle Andrew Tackett to crown the first ever UFC BJJ Welterweight Champion. Both men are team Gabriel.

With the Lightweight and Welterweight finals set, we will also see the coaches battle it out as Mikey Musumeci takes on Rerisson Gabriel for the inaugural UFC BJJ Bantamweight championship. All three title matches, plus more, and it all goes down at UFC BJJ 1 on Wednesday, June 25 at 8PM ET on UFC’s YouTube channel and UFC FightPass.
