Jon Jones Retires
Jon Jones is a very polarizing figure in the sport of MMA. While some fans think he’s the Greatest Of All Time, others deny that due to issues outside of the cage and drug use. Despite this, Jon’s record speaks for itself and he is a former Light-Heavyweight champion who never lost the title, and now, the same can be said for the Heavyweight title.
Jon Jones came back and won the UFC Heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane in March of 2023. He then successfully defended his title in November 2024 against Stipe Mocic. At the time, Tom Aspinall was the reigning interim-Heavyweight Champion.
Fans eagerly awaited news that Jon Jones would fight Tom Aspinall and we’d crown an undisputed champion, but, that will not happen. Today, following UFC Baku, Dana White has confirmed at the post-fight press conference that Jon Jones has informed the UFC that he is officially retired. With that, Tom Aspinall has been crowned the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion.
Jon ‘Bones’ Jones retires with a MMA record of 28-1. His sole loss was a disqualification over Matt Hamill, when Jones used illegal elbow strikes, which were illegal at the time, but are not illegal now. Jones is the longest reigning heavyweight champion at this point and despite his outside-issues, leaves a fantastic fighting legacy behind.
As for Tom Aspinall, he has stated that he wasn’t chasing a Jones fight and just wanted the title. Now, he has it. Dana White said they’ll figure out what’s next for Tom Aspinall next week in a meeting.
Congratulations to Jon Jones on his career, and congratulations to Tom Aspinall on becoming the undisputed champion.
