Road To The Title Episode 5
On today’s episode of UFC BJJ: Road To The Title, we get two bouts, with one in each weight class. Up first, Team Gabriel’s #4 seed Welterweight (170lbs) Elijah Carlton takes on Team Musumeci’s #5 seed Jason Nolf. Both men made weight and the bout was on. This match sees Nolf, a collegiate wrestler, taking on the funky jiu-jitsu player, Carlton.
In the opening round, it was clear what each man’s game plan was for the bout. Elijah was immediately trying to pull guard off of his back, while Nolf used his wrestling credentials to take things slower and keep his legs away from Elijah. Despite this, Elijah was able to attempt a few submissions, but couldn’t get the finish. He did take the round.
In the second round, Nolf came out fast and was looking for submissions of his own, at any chance he had. He continue to chase foot locks, which kept Elijah on defense and though he didn’t find a finish, Jason Nolf takes that round. In the third and final, both men were on the hunt, Elijah off of his back and Jason looking to jump over his guard. A close round came down to a split decision after Elijah locked in an arm bar with seconds left, and Elijah Carlton takes it.

In our second bout, which takes place in the Lightweight division (155lbs), Team Gabriel’s #2 seed Josh Cisneros takes on Team Musumeci’s #7 seed Kyvann Gonzalez. But, a twist in the episode hits when Josh Cisneros could not make weight and was dropped from the competition. They brought in an outside grappler and 2x All-American wrestler, Cobey Fehr as a replacement.
In the opening round, Kyvann went right to his back to pull guard, Cobey dropped down to his knees and the two began hand fighting. Kyvann was looking for the leg and eventually found himself close enough to take the foot. He locked in an Abe-Lock which is a variation of a toe hold, and Cobey tapped.

With each coach taking one-a-piece, Team Musumeci is still in the lead with a 4-2 record. On the next episode, we have the last two quarterfinal matchups as Team Musumeci’s #3 Lightweight Danilo Moreira takes on Team Gabriel’s #6 seed Mauricio Rios. Then, in the Welterweight division, Team Musumeci’s #7 seed Nathan Haddad battles Team Gabriel’s #2 seed Andy Varela.
On June 25, the main event of UFC BJJ 1 will feature UFC BJJ: Road to the Title coaches Mikey Musumeci and Rerisson Gabriel competing for the inaugural UFC BJJ bantamweight championship, while the welterweight and lightweight finalists meet each other for gold in their respective divisions.
