It’s all tied up.

UFC BJJ: Road To The Title Episode 2

We continue on after yesterday’s episode with the second edition of UFC BJJ: Road To The Title. In today’s matchup, we have our first lightweight bout as top-seeded Lightweight Keith Krikorian of Team Gabriel takes on eight seed Issac Doederlein of Team Musumeci for a spot in the semi-finals.

After yesterday’s quick finish, we got to see how these rounds play out as this matchup went all three 5-minute rounds, similar to a non-title mma bout in UFC. Plus, the 10-point must system was in effect here for the judges decision. Issac, a former world champion in Gi, is heading into unfamiliar territory in this no-gi matchup. He immediately took bottom position and tried to goad Keith into his guard, and that’s the game he played throughout the bout.

Round one, Issac was working for the leg locks and with the rules stating that you score points by constantly attempting submissions, he was doing just that. But, Issac’s cardio started to fail him and in the second round, he looked very tired. This allowed Keith to take control and locked in a very tight D’arce choke, but Issac was able to wait it out until the bell sounded. One-a-piece going into the third and final round and Issac was back on his leg lock game, and he was successful at putting Keith in a few compromising positions, but couldn’t get the finish. We head to the judges. Though they use the 10-point must system, they didn’t announce who scored which rounds and just revealed that Issac Doederlein took the unanimous decision.

  • Issac Doederlein def. Keith Krikorian via Unanimous Decision.

Team Musumeci is now on the board with this win and the coaches are tied 1-1. In tomorrow’s bout, we’re back to the Welterweight’s as Team Musumeci’s #3 seed Davis Asare takes on Team Gabriel’s #6 seed Austin Oranday.

On June 25, the main event of UFC BJJ 1 will feature UFC BJJ: Road to the Title coaches Mikey Musumeci and Rerisson Gabriel competing for the inaugural UFC BJJ bantamweight championship, while the welterweight and lightweight finalists meet each other for gold in their respective divisions.
