Is Islam’s career soon done?
UFC Welterweight Division
UFC’s Welterweight division is heating up with Jack Della Maddalena recently winning the title from Belal Muhammad. Now, with Jack champion, Islam Makhachev has vacated his Lightweight title and plans to move up a division to fight Jack for the belt.
But, this Saturday, UFC holds a fight night in Atalanta, Georgia, which is headlined by Kamaru Usman and Joaquin Buckley, two potential title challengers. Heading into this weekend, Joaquin did media, where he was asked about the Islam situation. Not only Buckley, but Usman has previously said that they understand why Islam will get a title fight next. On the topic, Buckley is down to fight Islam, but thinks he will retire before he gets the chance.
Me and Islam? Yeah, no, well, I would love it. But, I don’t think Islam would. I truly believe if Islam is able to win that 170 title, he’s going to move. He’s done everything he needed to do. What’s he going to stick around and potentially lose that winning streak? I don’t think so. I think he’s really just trying to cement his name, it’s really just kind of a legacy pass and then once he wins that welterweight belt, my man going to retire at the end of the day. That’s my opinion.
While Buckley may not be far off, there’s always a possibility that Islam could win and want to at least defend the welterweight title one time. There’s also other contenders like Sean Brady and Shabbat Rakhmonov waiting in the wings with good reasons to get a title fight. Buckley also mentioned that he doesn’t think Islam is a big threat like people think he is, at 170lbs.
The welterweight division is in no shortage of challengers, but that’s a good problem to have. Kamaru Usman and Joaquin Buckley have a chance to insert their name into that conversation Saturday night.
