Moments ago, at the NXT Battleground PLE, NXT star Trick Williams overcame the odds and defeated Joe Hendry to capture the TNA World Title.
Joe has been the TNA World Champion since the Genesis PPV in January when he defeated Nic Nemeth – for 126 days as of today. This match main evented the Battleground PLE tonight.
Trick and Joe have been at each others throats for weeks now, but Trick really made an impression when he attacked Joe Hendry after his successful World Title defense over Frankie Kazarian and NXT star Ethan Page at the TNA Rebellion PPV.
This past Friday night at the LIVE TNA Under Siege PLE, Joe Hendry teamed with Elijah (former WWE star Elias) to defeat the pairing of Frankie Kazarian and NXT star Trick Williams.
Tonight, however, Trick Williams was the one standing tall tonight as the NEW TNA World Champion.
This is the first title to change hands between companies since this WWE-TNA partnership was announced in mid-January.
Trick Williams is the first NXT talent to win a TNA title of any kind. Trick joins a long line of TNA World Champions that includes Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, Kurt Angle, Sting, the longest reigning World Champion Josh Alexander, Moose, Nic Nemeth, Matt & Jeff Hardy, and many more.
NXT Executive Vice President of Talent Development and NXT Show runner Shawn Michaels hyped up the match prior to the start of the Battleground show.
TNA President Carlos Silva also commented on the match:
What does this mean for the landscape of pro wrestling going forward? Who will be the next challenger for the TNA World Title? Will Trick defended the title in both companies?
We’ll have to tune in to NXT on Tuesday night and then again to TNA iMPACT! on Thursday night.
