Michael Morales Wants The Ian Garry Fight, Willing To Accept Anything
Michael Morales is riding high.
UFC Vegas 106
Michael Morales has defeated Gilbert Burns via TKO in round one on Saturday, May 17 at UFC Vegas 106. With this win, the undefeated 18-0 prospect is going to leap up to at least #8 in the welterweight rankings and a huge fight could be near.
With Jack Della Maddalena just defeating Belal Muhammad last weekend for the Welterweight Championship, this puts the division in a frenzy. Islam Makhachev will now move up a division to fight Jack, leaving multiple contenders such as Sean Brady, Ian Garry, Shavkat Rakhmonov and now Michael Morales all wondering what’s next. Plus, the winner of June’s Joaquin Buckley vs. Kamaru Usman also has a potential shot at gold.
With the division in a spiral, Michael Morales was asked at the post-fight press conference what he wants next. Michael name Ian Garry, but noted that he thinks Ian the #6 ranked, is too high ranked for him and won’t take that fight. So, he’s down for whoever.
Yeah, I’ve talked about Ian Garry. That’s a fighter that I’ve always wanted to fight. But, I know that he’s won his last fight so he’s looking up in the rankings right there. So, that might not happen. But, I said, you know, the fight that I would really like to make, the biggest thing, is just being healthy and kind of recovering from a couple of strikes that I had and I took, to be in Guadalajara. I think that if that fight, if they’re able to make it, I would like to fight whoever in Guadalajara. I think that at this point, taking advantage of opportunities and being grateful for opportunities to fight maybe the 6th, the 5th, the 4th in the ranking, and we’ll take any opportunity that god gives us to do.
Morales has said in the past that he actually just doesn’t like Ian Garry because he finds him annoying. That’s a good enough reason to fight, right?
While the division is sort of at a stand-still, it does make things interesting to have this many possible contenders. Morales later said that he would step in for Usman vs. Buckley if need be.
