The rumors seem to be true. Former New Japan star and current member of the United Empire is heading to the WWE.
According to WrestleVotes, it seems Jeff Cobb isn’t going into WWE the normal way as he seems destined to begin on either Raw or Smackdown.
“Jeff Cobb is on the way to WWE with the expectation that he will debut on the main roster relatively soon. Cobb’s name has started to float internally around creative.”
Cobb had been with New Japan since 2017. In New Japan, Cobb was a NJPW TV champion, Never Openweight champion and a three time IWGP Tag Team champion.
Cobb also was apart of the United Empire which is one of the top factions in New Japan. He is now the fourth member of the group to leave the company after Will Ospreay, Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher left for AEW.
Even as a free agent, Cobb won the tag titles with Callum Newman on April 5th. Cobb did make it quite public he wasn’t going to resign with the company. After that was clearly the case, NJPW stripped Newman and Cobb of the titles on April 14th. Just two weeks later, fellow United Empire members Newman and Great O-Khan defeated Bishamon for the tag titles.
The former NJPW tag champ also made major appearances for Lucha Undergound, Ring of Honor and AEW in the last decade.
Most top free agent talent who WWE signs had been heading to NXT before they eventually get called up to the main roster. That has happened to talent like Ricky Saints, Ethan Page and Stephanie Vaquer. But it seems top brass in WWE are ready to use the 42 year old on either Raw or Smackdown. No timetable for his debut has been known but it seems it will happen sooner rather than later.
