Topuria is changing his name.
El Matador No More.
Ilia Topuria set social media ablaze on March 6 when he posted on X “When we announce it, you won’t believe it. Get ready.” This led to many fans immediately speculating different opponents for the former featherweight champion, including many thinking a Conor McGregor matchup was in the works.
Others believed that maybe UFC were going to officially announce that Ilia’s first fight since moving up to the lightweight division would be against the 155lbs champion, Islam Makhachev. Since that tweet, Ilia has been dead silent on social media. That was until today. Ilia has finally broken his silence and revealed that Ilia ‘El Matador’ Topuria will no longer be announced, as he plans to change his nickname for his next fight and he will be stepping into the octagon with a new identity.
It’s unclear IF this IS his big announcement. Yet, fans in his comments section seem to be disappointed that he hyped everyone up for two weeks just ti announce a nickname change. We’ll continue to await something else, but, if this is the announcement, what do you think the new nickname will be?
