Exclusive: The Truth Behind Jimmy Jacobs’ AEW Departure
In an exclusive interview with Mark O’Brien (@wrestlemobs) for Bodyslam.net, former AEW producer and wrestling veteran Jimmy Jacobs shares the real reasons behind his decision to leave AEW. He opens up about the personal factors that led to his departure and provides a deeper look at the demands of his role within the company. Jacobs also reflects on how the fast-paced nature of his career ultimately pushed him to take a step back from the industry.
“I Didn’t Take a Day Off” – Jimmy Jacobs Reflects on AEW’s Grueling Schedule
Jacobs describes how the intense schedule at AEW left him feeling physically and mentally exhausted. He worked relentlessly for over a year without taking a single day off, something that eventually caught up with him.
“I didn’t take a day off. And then once everything caught up with me, I was like, Yep, I need some time.”
Looking back on his career, Jacobs acknowledges how long the grind lasted, especially during the early years of his career in wrestling.
“I started in the wrestling business when I was 15 years old, and by the time I was 18… it was just like anytime, anyplace, anywhere, for any amount of money,” he recalls. The demands of constantly working without breaks eventually took its toll, leading him to recognize that he needed a change.
No Salacious Rumors: Jacobs Explains the Calm Departure from AEW
Jacobs emphasizes that, unlike many other wrestling exits that are often clouded by drama and rumors, his departure from AEW was calm and straightforward. He credits AEW owner Tony Khan for being understanding and supportive of his decision to take a break from the company.
“I stayed off the internet completely. After I talked to Tony, there was a lot of misconceptions about my time in AEW, and what my role was there,” Jacobs explains, pointing out that many of the rumors about his exit were based on misunderstandings.
He also mentions how refreshing it was to step away without facing the usual negative speculations that often surround high-profile exits in the wrestling world.
“It was refreshing that somebody knows their own boundaries enough to cancel… and not get caught up in the whirlwind of the industry,” Jacobs shares, showing gratitude for the calm nature of his departure.
Handling Misunderstandings: “I Was Judged by Lies”
Jacobs also speaks candidly about the difficulties of dealing with public judgment based on inaccurate information. While in AEW, he faced criticism due to misconceptions about his role in the creative process. He points out that many of the stories circulating online were completely unfounded.
“There were lies about me and my career, probably starting… after I was fired from WWE… but it was just a complete fabrication,” Jacobs says, addressing the false narratives that have followed him through his career.
He admits that it was a challenging experience, having to navigate being judged for things that weren’t true.
“I still honestly haven’t gotten used to being judged by lies,” Jacobs reflects, acknowledging the emotional toll this kind of criticism has had on him.
Jacobs Reflects on AEW’s Impact on Wrestling
Despite the challenges, Jacobs has a positive view of AEW’s influence on the industry. He talks about how AEW has created new opportunities for talent, including improved wages, and how it’s ultimately raised the bar for the entire wrestling world.
“Tony Khan has had a positive effect on the wrestling business that it can’t be understated. So many people are making a living and making good money because of Tony,” Jacobs explains. He goes on to highlight how AEW’s success has even pushed WWE to raise its talent’s pay, which he sees as a positive development for everyone in the industry.
“There are so many jobs, so many guys making good money,” Jacobs adds, emphasizing how AEW’s presence has led to greater financial stability for wrestlers in both companies.
