TNA World Champion Joe Hendry Talks WWE Royal Rumble, John Cena, Sheamus, Going Viral, Plus More With Ariel Helwani
Earlier today, Joe Hendry was an in-studio guest on The Ariel Helwani Show, where they discussed a myriad of topics. Joe Hendry is the current TNA World Champion, and he took part in the WWE Royal Rumble this past Saturday night. Hendry was the fifteenth entrant in the Rumble, and received one of the loudest reactions of the night. Hendy discussed that moment, plus more.
Joe Hendry talks about how Sheamus watched him in the Rumble from the corner and Hendry says that maybe the fans would be interested in seeing Sheamus come over to TNA Wrestling.
Ariel asks about the photo where Triple H points at him and how it came about. Joe says that right before he was getting ready to go out for his spot, Triple H pulled him to the side and did the infamous finger point photo.
Getting advice from Rhodes and Punk:
Joe Hendry says that he approached both Cody Rhodes and CM Punk backstage and asked them how they would approach this (being in this spot, as an outsider), and he got some great advice. Hendry also put over The Miz – he said they all went out of their way to help him succeed. Joe says it takes an army of people to get to the point he’s in, and a great opportunity for him to get a top level reaction in front of a crowd of 70,000 people. Ariel mentions how it could be a situation where some of the top talent look down on him, but Hendry says one thing about working with top guys is that they’re all comfortable in who they are so they’re trying to elevate other people. Ariel mentions that it might be the middle of the card talent more threated by Joe, to which he replies “You said it, not me!”
Joe Hendry says that he believes he will wrestle John Cena this year, but that Cena told him he has to be the one to create enough interest in the match for it to happen. Joe says that he had a long conversation with John Cena backstage at the Royal Rumble on Saturday, and while he’s going to keep some of the conversation private – he discloses that John did tell him that “Fortune Favors the Bold.” He gave Hendry some great advice while the Rumble was going on and spent alot of time talking with Hendry. Cena told Joe that he has to put himself in a position where himself versus John Cena is one of the most compelling matchups in professional wrestling.
Joe Hendry became the TNA World Champion exactly two weeks prior to the Royal Rumble – on January 19th – at the TNA Genesis PPV, when he defeated Nic Nemeth (formerly WWE Champion Dolph Ziggler).
Hendry appeared numerous times in 2024 on the WWE NXT brand, including being the first TNA contracted talent to main event the NXT No Mercy Premium Live Event when he took on former NXT World Champion Ethan Page. Hendry made history again in December when he won the NXT Moment of the Year for his NXT debut.
Joe Hendry successfully defended his TNA World Title against Matt Cardona two weeks ago on a LIVE iMPACT! episode, and is set to open TNA iMPACT! on Thursday night with a celebratory concert.
