The professional wrestling world is mourning the loss of one of its most respected figures, as WWE announced earlier today that Hall of Famer Dory Funk Jr. has passed away at the age of 85.
A cornerstone of the famed Funk wrestling family, Dory Funk Jr. built a legacy that spanned more than five decades inside the ring and left an even greater impact through the generations of wrestlers he helped develop. Widely regarded for his technical ability, toughness, and professionalism, Funk became one of the most influential names in wrestling history.
The son of legendary promoter and wrestler Dory Funk Sr., Funk was introduced to the business at an early age. Under his father’s guidance, he honed the skills that would eventually make him one of the sport’s premier competitors. Reflecting on his upbringing during a 2007 interview with WWE, Funk recalled looking up to his father and aspiring to follow in his footsteps from childhood.
Throughout his storied career, Funk excelled as both a singles wrestler and tag team competitor alongside his younger brother, Terry Funk. His greatest championship accomplishment came during his historic reign as NWA World Heavyweight Champion, holding the title for more than four years—one of the longest reigns in the championship’s distinguished history.
Outside the ring, Funk’s influence continued through the creation of the Funking Conservatory, the wrestling school he operated alongside his wife, Marti, whom he married in 1989. The school became one of the industry’s premier training grounds, helping prepare future stars including Kurt Angle, Edge, Christian, The Hardy Boyz, Mark Henry, Mickie James, and numerous others who would go on to successful careers.
In recognition of their contributions to professional wrestling, Dory and Terry Funk were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009, with longtime friend Dusty Rhodes delivering the induction.
Dory Funk Jr.’s legacy extends far beyond the championships he captured or the matches he wrestled. As one of wrestling’s greatest technicians, an accomplished champion, and an influential trainer who helped shape generations of talent, his impact on the industry will be remembered for years to come.
