UFC 280: Oliveira vs. Makhachev Live Results and Analysis

BodySlam is live on the action for tonight’s UFC 280 PPV event that is being headlined by Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev for the UFC Lightweight championship, Aljamain Sterling vs. TJ Dillashaw for the UFC Bantamweight championship, Sean O’Malley vs. Petr Yan plus much more.

For those that did not catch the early-prelims and prelim card, here are the results below for each fight and the result.

Below you will find results and live analysis on UFC 280’s main card which kicks off with Katlyn Chookagian vs. Manon Fiorot in the women’s Flyweight division.

Round 1: Fiorot kicks off the 1st-round with some pressuring, Chookagian stays on the outside. Kicks by Chookagian. A lot of shots from Chookagian hitting air, but Fiorot not attacking a lot. Chookagian doing most of the pressuring. Front kick to the face by Chookagian. Not much going on in terms for damage or significant strikes. The round ends. 10-9, Chookagian.

Round 2: Fiorot clips Chookagian with a left. Good left hook by Fiorot. Another one follows it up. Fiorot looks much better in the second round. Both are swinging often, not a lot is not connecting. Two minutes left. Chookagian is connecting. The bell rings. 10-9, Fiorot.

Round 3: The French fighter is connecting just as much as Chookagian, but her power is clearly higher. Chookagian’s face shows that. Big left hook by Fiorot. One minute left. And Fiorot lands a takedown. She controls for a few seconds and Chookagian gets back up. Fiorot clinches her and connects with a knee to the body in the final sequence.

RESULT: Manon Fiorot def. Katlyn Chookagian via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

The second fight of the evening is in the Lightweight division between Beneil Dariush vs. Mateusz Gamrot.

Round 1: Good leg kick by Dariush. Gamrot is bleeding from his ear. Gamrot catches another kick from Dariush and takes him down. Darisuh wastes no time and goes on attack mode from bottom. Working for a heel hook. Gamrot presses Dariush against the cage. Two minutes left. Gamrot shoots, Dariush stuffs it. It’s a stalemate and they shortly resume the fight on the feet. Nothing happens before hearing the bell. Very close round. 10-9, Gamrot.

Round 2: Dariush connecting with leg kicks and jab. He’s getting the better of the striking exchanges. Gamrot shoots and fails again. Dariush’s takedown defense is on point tonight. Big left from Dariush. We’re halfway through the round. Gamrot shoots and eats a knee in the process, he’s unable to get the takedown. One minute left. Each move feels consequential. Gamrot with a jumping knee and a takedown in the final seconds of the round. 10-9, Dariush.

Round 3: Dariush with a couple of consecutive leg kicks. Gamrot shoots for another takedown, but Dariush’s takedown defense is out of this world. Both fighters very hesitant. A giant left hook drops Gamrot. Gamrot with another takedown attempt in the final 30 seconds and this time gets it. But not for long. Dariush is right back up. 10-8 Dariush.

RESULT: Beneil Dariush def. Mateusz Gamrot via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

The third fight on tonight’s UFC 280 card is a Bantamweight banger between Sean O’Malley vs. Petr Yan.

Round 1: Yan counters with a punch upstairs. O’Malley begins to circle on the outside and looks for a kick to the body. Yan goes to an inside leg kick, then a kick to the body from Yan followed by a left hand that just misses. O’Malley fires off more quick strikes as Yan continues to pressure forward. O’Malley keeps it standing and they returned to the center, An overhand left from Yan glances and he stays close, then gets on the legs for a big takedown. O’Malley gets back to his feet relatively quickly. O’Malley surprises with a takedown attempt, but Yan scrambles before the round ends. 10-9 Yan.

Round 2: O’Malley stings Yan with a hard punch and Yan backs away covering up. Yan covers up well and then lands a huge punch to hurt O’Malley. An armbar attempt from O’Malley is avoided by Yan, but in the scramble. A moment later, they separate and return to the center. Yan hits a beautiful trip, but doesn’t follow O’Malley to the ground. O’Malley begins to circle and work behind his jab, landing a few sharp punches. Yan closes the distance and changes levels for the takedown, getting the fight back to the ground where he maintains position until the horn. 10-9 Yan.

Round 3: O’Malley defends a takedown attempt and then lands a few jabs. They trade kicks to the legs and the body. Back to doubling up the jab for O’Malley, but Yan charges ahead and looks for another takedown. O’Malley shucks it off and busts open a cut with a strike. The blood is flowing quickly and O’Malley starts to press forward. A big head kick lands to Yan, but he shoots in and completes another takedown. O’Malley grabs a kimura to get back to the feet. Both miss with big punches. Yan lands a nice punch and shoots in for another takedown. O’Malley defends and rolls out of the clinch. More jabs from O’Malley, who then charges forward but gets taken down. Yan rains down punches from the top until the horn. 10-9 Yan.

RESULT: Sean O’Malley def. Petr Yan via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

The co-main event is here and it is for the UFC Bantamweight championship between the champ Aljamain Sterling vs. TJ Dillashaw.

Round 1: A Dillashaw kick is catch by Sterling and uses it to complete a takedown. Sterling begins controlling from the top less than 30 seconds into the fight. An injury may have occurred to the left arm of Dillashaw as he favors it. Sterling postures up and begins raining down hard punches as Dillashaw covers up. The referee steps in closer. Dillashaw turns, Sterling takes the back and looks for the choke. Dillashaw is able to escape and tries to scramble, but Sterling floats and gets right back in on another RNC attempt. Dillashaw tries to power back to his feet, but Sterling drags him back down and lands more punches. Dillashaw powers up again and this time gets away. It’s apparent there is an issue with his left shoulder as he circles away from Sterling. A moment later, Sterling gets another takedown before the round ends. 10-8 Sterling.

Round 2: Dillashaw’s shoulder was popped back in between rounds. He still doesn’t offer anything with the left. Sterling shoots in and completes a takedown. Sterling looks for a D’Arce as Dillashaw tries to get up, but slips away. Dillashaw’s shoulder looks out again and the refs looks closer, but allows the action to continue. Sterling gets the fight back to the ground again. Dillashaw is flattened out on his stomach and the strikes continue as Dillashaw covers up. The referee saw enough and this one is all over.

RESULT: Aljamain Sterling def. T.J. Dillashaw via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 3:44

The main event is here and it is for the vacant UFC Lightweight championship between the former champion Charles Oliveira vs. rising contender Islam Makhachev.

Round 1: Oliveira opens with a jumping kick that misses. Makhachev lands sharp punches, including a hard left that hurt Oliveira. Makhachev clinches and Oliveira accepts going to the ground. Immediately, Oliveira begins looking for a triangle. Makhachev gets out and maintains top position in Oliveira’s guard. Oliveira looks for a leg lock, but then uses it to sweep instead and they return to the feet. Oliveira keeps with the clinch though, and they work against the fence. Makhachev hits a toss and gets the fight back to the mat. Working from guard, Makhachev remains heavy to keep Oliveira from attempting submissions. With 30 seconds remaining, Makhachev postures up and lands a few big punches. A nice upkick from Oliveira lands a few seconds before the horn sounds.10-9, Makhachev.

Round 2: A front kick from Oliveira misses to start the round. They trade punches and then clinch along the fence. Makhachev gets double underhooks and looks for the opening to get the fight to the ground. Oliveira gets free and lands a knee on the exit. Back in the center, they trade punches as Oliveira marches forward. Makhachev takes the center and lands a nice two-punch combo. Makhachev cracks Oliveira with a hard punch that drops Oliveira. Makhachev rushes in while avoiding upkicks, and takes top position. The arm triangle is there. Makhachev clears the legs and sinks it in, and Oliveira taps. Wow. What an incredible finish from Makhachev.

RESULT: Islam Makhachev def. Charles Oliveira via submission (arm triangle) – Round 2, 3:16.
