IMPACT Wrestling Indian Star Bhupinder Gujjar Talks Intergender Wrestling, Brian Myers, and Digital Media Title

Ahead of his Ladder match this Thursday for the IMPACT Digital Media Title, Bhupinder Gujjar spoke with Riju Dasgupta of Sportskeeda Wrestling, Gujjar discussed a variety of topics.

Do you want to tell us about the match you have coming up?

“It’s a Ladder Match for the [IMPACT] Digital Media belt. “One of the biggest and best matches of my life is coming Thursday, September 22nd, and you guys are going to love it. I can make sure – I can guarantee it.

We have talked many times both on camera and off camera and you have mentioned that it was Samoa Joe who inspired you to get into this kind of wrestling that you do so well nowadays, and all of it came from watching the X division and those crazy ladder matches. I know these are your roots. What are you going to show us in this ladder match that maybe we haven’t seen from you?

“I think this is the first ladder match they’ve done in about 5 years – 2017 if I’m not mistaken. It’ll be worth it. You’re going to see stuff – you’re going to see blood coming, definitely. I got a broken nose from that so you can get an idea of how big a match it’s going to be (this match was filmed on either August 26th or 27th in Dallas, Texas, and airing this Thursday). We perform some great stunts, as an Indian wrestler I didn’t expect it to happy this early, but it happened and it went great. I gave my 200%, it’s going to be a great match, and it’s worth watching. I used to follow all this people and now I’m following them, or giving my 100% to be like them, so I’m grateful and thankful.”

That’s great, and that’s what sets IMPACT apart is all those Ultimate X and Ladder matches so we’re all looking forward to that. Another thing that sets IMPACT apart is that they have titles and do intergender matches that both men and women can fight for. I know both of us growing up in India were exposed to a very different kind of wrestling where there was a men’s division and a women’s division, but now the Digital Media title has brought both genders on the same plane. Is there a female on the roster you’d like to take on?

“My first preference would be Jordynne Grace, always. I love her work, she’s the best, there’s no doubt in that, and we have a match it’s going to be great. Also, Deonna Purrazzo, she’s the best too. So if I had to defend my title in the future with them – if I win and I have to defend against them, I’m down. These 2 women wrestlers are my first preference in IMPACT Wrestling.”

I know you have this heated rivalry with Brian Myers right now, and both of you want the gold, right? But I also know that both of you are a big fan of wrestling as well, so is there a sense of excitement working with a star like Brian Myers, and maybe learning a few things from him as well?

“Excitement, nervousness. When you’re nervous, you don’t want to hurt someone bad, especially like Brian Myers. He’s got so much experience in this business, like I have no clue. I never got a chance to work [with] him before so I had no clue, but I used to watch him, and I didn’t have an exact idea like how he could perform,” Gujjar said.

“He’s great, I have to say, and the way he performs, I have to match the energy he brings to the ring. That was one of my biggest concerns at that point in time. I was like I can’t look weak. I was preparing for this match for years, especially having a match with Brian Myers. I can say it was my dream to have a match with all these legend wrestled, all these senior wresters. So when I got a chance, I was like shocked for a second, for a couple of minutes. I was like, okay, this is big. I can’t let anyone down now, all eyes on me. I have to give my 100%. We had a great three or four matches, and all went well. I heard great and got compliments about my wrestling style. People told me I deserve to be here. Listening to all these from all those senior wrestlers backstage, it means a lot to me. It motivates me and now I’m at a whole next level, I can say that. Working with me taught me a lot, like how should I do the camera work, the selling, the how to build my comeback, how to work with IMPACT’s audience, how to work with people when you’re in the ring. You have to crazy inside the ring because once you’re enjoying it, people can enjoy with you, too. So I learned from him. His wrestling style is like me, and I like to have the matches where we can present ourselves. It’s a new experience for me, so that was great,” Gujjar said.
