Tony Ferguson vs. Li Jingliang Set for UFC 279, Ferguson’s First Welterweight Bout Since 2010

UFC President Dana White made a huge announcement for UFC 279 which is set to take place next month.

At the UFC 278 post-fight conference, White announced that Tony Ferguson will be fighting Li Jingliang next month at UFC 279 on September 10th. The event is scheduled to be headlined by Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz in a 5-round main event. This fight will also be held at 170lbs.

The last time Ferguson competed at Welterweight was vs. Brock Jardine to win the vacant PureCombat Welterweight Championship. Since then he moved down to Lightweight, defeated the likes of Ramsey Nijem, Yves Edwards, Gleison Tibau, Josh Thomson, Edson Barboza, Rafael Dos Anjos, Kevin Lee, Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone.

Jingliang’s recent win over Muslim Salikhov bounced him back from a 1st round finish loss vs. Chimaev who will be headlining the card vs. Diaz. Jingliang also holds wins over David Zawada, Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos and Santiago Ponzinibbio.
