Dana White On Joanna/Weili 2: The Winner Will Face Esparza Next for Strawweight Championship

A shocking title change went down at UFC 274 when Carla Esparza became a 2-time Strawweight champion after defeating Rose Namajunas in a not so exciting co-main event, Despite it not being the best fight you’ll see if you’re an MMA fan, it still ended with a new champion and at tonight’s post-fight conference for UFC 274, UFC President Dana White had confirmed that the winner of the rematch between Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Zhang Weili at UFC 275 next month will face Esparza for the championship at a future date and location.

A trilogy between Namajunas and Esparza would be the fight that the former champion would like, but due to the way the fight looked, it is obvious why the UFC president would want to go with a different type of direction for the next Strawweight championship bout that gets booked in the future. Namajunas would talk at the post-fight press conference where she believes “I won that fight” and that she stuck to a strategy that would’ve led to her retaining the belt, if she would have retained the championship tonight.

Next month at UFC 275 in Singapore, China will be the first event back there since Demian Maia defeated Ben Askren on October 26th in 2019. The main event will be between Glover Teixeira vs Jiri Procházka for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, the co-main will be Valentina Schevchenko vs Taila Santos for the UFC Women’s Flyweight championship and the rematch between Jedrzejczyk vs Weili to determine the #1 contender for Esparza’s newly won Strawweight Championship.
