WWE Announces Stadium Show Set For Wales

Amidst years of anticipation, the wait for WWE fans in the United Kingdom is over as WWE will bring a premium live event emanating from a stadium in the United Kingdom for the first time in three decades.

The event promises to be happening. It will transpire on September 3rd of this year at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. “Principality Stadium is the perfect place for a major event, hosting our amazing fans from Wales, throughout all of Europe, and around the world,” said John Porco, WWE Senior Vice President, said in a statement on the company’s website. “The weekend will be filled with a variety of WWE experiences that we believe will leave a lasting memory, on par with Summerslam at Wembley Stadium in 1992.”

“Wales will provide an iconic location for WWE’s return to the UK after 30 years and showcase our country to a global audience of millions, including extended reach in the USA,”Vaughan Gething, Welsh Government Minister for Economy. continues. “This is set to be the perfect addition to a huge year of sport, entertainment and culture in Wales that will attract people from across the globe to experience what our country has to offer.”

The last time WWE had hosted a stadium extravaganza in the United Kingdom was Summerslam 1992. To put that into perspective, that show was headlined by a contest between Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith, a WWE Championship match between Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior and featured superstars such as Rick Martel, The Beverly Brothers and Nailz. Suffice to say, it’s been a minute since WWE has hosted an event to this magnitude in the United Kingdom. The last time a pay-per-view was held in the United Kingdom was the better part of two decades ago, when Kevin Nash challenged Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Street Fight at the 2003 Insurrextion event.

With all that said, WWE has attempted to expand its international profile in recent years, including its finger print in the United Kingdom. WWE introduced the United Kingdom Championship, currently held by Ilja Dragunov, in 2017. The Championship has been a staple on NXT UK, which has introduced main roster talents such as Butch, Ridge Holland and Doudrop to the company. In the mean time, performers of European descent have reached unprecedented heights since the last time WWE hosted a major premium live event in the United Kingdom, as talents such as Sheamus and Drew McIntyre have won the WWE Championship multiple times.

Folks in the United Kingdom who are interested in potentially attending the event can register for pre-sale offerings here. Otherwise, Bodyslam will monitor the event and provide further updates as more information becomes accessible to the general public.
