Update On When AEW Decided To Put The TNT Title On Scorpio Sky

On this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, the main event featured a TNT Title Match between Sammy Guevara and Scorpio Sky, which would see the crowning of a new champion as the show close with Sky capturing the gold and Paige VanZant signing her new AEW contract on the butt of a fallen Tay Conti in the middle of the ring. But how long had the title change been planned?

According to a report from Sean Ross Sapp via Fightful Select, the plan for Scorpio Sky to defeat Sammy Guevara for the TNT Title had been in place since late 2021. It was added that the departure of Cody Rhodes only caused a “minimal” hiccup, but that a lot of what happened still went as was originally planned.

You can read the report from Fightful Select below:

“It would appear that AEW has had some of their big title changes planned for quite some time.

After Scorpio Sky’s AEW TNT Title win on the March 9 Dynamite, Fightful Select learned that the title win had been planned as far back as late 2021. We’re told that the Cody Rhodes departure caused a “minimal” hiccup, but that a lot of what happened still went as planned.

In addition to that, when Miro was still AEW TNT Champion, Fightful learned word that Sammy Guevara would win the championship, lose it to Cody Rhodes, then regain it. However, Cody Rhodes being unable to make his scheduled title defense delayed that by a week. Regardless, it looks like AEW has general long term plans for most of their titles. AEW Founder Tony Khan told media in November that he always knew who the first four AEW World Champions would be, and it didn’t deviate.

Scorpio Sky is scheduled to defend his newly won AEW TNT Championship on next week’s special St. Patrick’s Day Slam edition of Dynamite from San Antonio against Face of the Revolution Ladder Match winner Wardlow.
