Edwards/Masvidal UFC 269 Fight is Off Due To Injury

Even though it wasn’t a title fight, it could easily be argued that the Jorge Masvidal/Leon Edwards fight was the bout most looked forward to on the December 11th UFC 269 card. The card is going to be headlined by Dustin Poirier vs Charles Oliveira for the UFC lightweight title.

Sadly, the fight has now been cancelled due to the ‘BMF’ suffering an injury. Hunter Campbell, the UFC’s Chief Business Officer, made the announcement on ESPN

As of now, the specifics on Masvidal’s injury have not been disclosed. It is also unknown whether or not the fight will be reschedule when Masvidal is cleared, or if it will just be passed on.

This high amount of anticipation fans had only makes this news more disappointing. We have all been waiting for this bout since 2019 when Masvidal (35-15) and Edwards (19-3, 1 no contest) had their altercation backstage where Masvidal gave Edwards a ‘three-piece and a soda.’

It has not yet been announced if Edwards will fight someone else and remain on the card, or if he will be scrapped from the card as well. Edwards has had a hard time getting/finding fights due to the pandemic travel restrictions and his opponents getting injured.

Edwards posted a tweet in response to the announcement saying the following, “Disappointed but honestly I knew this fraud didn’t want to fight me anyway. He was just a stop off on the way to the title. The goal remains the same. Much needed family time now, @usman84kg i will see you soon.”

Back in December of 2020, Edwards was set to face rising star Khamzat Chimaev, who ended up withdrawing. After the Masvidal fight was cancelled, Chimaev was quick to offer his services when he tweeted: “Let’s go bro we do it @Leon_edwardsmma.”

Nate Diaz, who lost to Masvidal when the ‘Baddest MotherFucker’ title was on the line, tweeted and then deleted: “I fought 3 of my last 4 fights injured. Man up!”
