Will Ospreay Wants To Establish IWGP British Heavyweight Title

Will Ospreay held a press conference in the early hours of this morning following his monumental win over Kota Ibushi in the main event of NJPW Sakura Genesis to become the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. During the press conference Will Ospreay addressed his Revolution Pro Wrestling British Heavyweight Championship, which he currently holds following his victory over Zack Sabre Jr at a Rev Pro Event in February of last year.

Since winning the championship Will Ospreay has defended his Rev Pro Britsh Heavyweight championship on two occasions against Kyle Fletcher and Ricky Knight Jr (RKJ) at closed set recordings of Rev Pro’s Epic Encounters series. Since moving back to Japan to compete of NJPW, Ospreay has not been able to travel back to UK defend the championship, to address this Will Ospreay suggested that the Revolution Pro British Heavyweight championship become the IWGP British Heavyweight championship.

“Now due to the circumstances of course going on in the world right now I cannot go back to England to defend my British Heavyweight championship, Its a shame and you know I would look forward to defending my British Heavyweight Championship its just the fact that it is what it is. I cant go over to England right now and there are no challengers for me there right now and Andy will just settle with the Southside Heavyweight championship, if there was anything I could do to suggest I am more than happy to defend the British Heavyweight Championship in Japan and raise the stakes a little bit higher if that was a possibility I am more than happy to go further and talk to management about creating more of base for UK as it is my home town and we have brought so many of the best wrestlers in the world I would like to even present the option and the idea of changing the revolution Pro Wrestling British Heavyweight Championship into the IWGP British Heavyweight Championship.”

Will Ospreay suggested that he would be doing this to help create a platform for British Wrestlers to come and compete for NJPW. Not wanting to leave Rev Pro without a championship he also suggested that Rev Pro Wrestling make their South Side Heavyweight Championship the main championship at Rev Pro. Rev Pro have been holding a tournament during their closed set Epic Encounter series to crown a new South Side Heavyweight champion, currently Dan Moloney has made it to the final and will face either RKJ or Charlie Sterling.

The Rev Pro British Heavyweight championship has been fought for and defended on NJPW wrestling before with Zack Sabre Jr defending the championship on numerous NJPW shows. There have also been many NJPW performers that have held the Rev Pro British Heavyweight Championship including, AJ Styles who held both IWGP Heavyweight championship and Rev Pro Championship at the same time, Minoru Suzuki, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tomohiro Ishii and Katsuyuri Shibata.

What do you make of Will Ospreay wanting to create a IWGP British Heavyweight Championship? Should Rev Pro let NJPW take ownership of their championship?
