New IWGP Heavyweight Champion Crowned

A new IWGP World Champion was crowned at NJPW Sakura Genesis.

After Kota Ibushi unified the IWGP Championship and Intercontinental Championship to create the IWGP World Championship, Ibush failed in his first defense of the newly created title, losing to Will Ospreay in the main event of the evening.

Ospreay becomes the first British IWGP Champion from the original lineage of the IWGP Heavyweight Title, and Ibushi fails in what amounts to the first defense of the new title. The titles were considered unified following his defense against El Desperado, thus making that his last defense of the original Heavyweight Title.

Following the match, Ospreay called out Kazuchika Okada, but their confrontation was interrupted by Shingo Takagi. It was then decided Takagi would be Ospreay’s first challenger, with Okada next.

This is Ospreay’s first reign as IWGP World Champion.
