Will Ospreay Wins The New Japan Cup

Earlier today Will Ospreay and Shingo Tagaki added yet another instant classic to their storied rivalry as the two men faced off in New Japan Cup final. It was another hard fought battle with plenty of action, both men pulling out all the stops to win, in the end it was final flurry from the British born superstar that saw Ospreay hit Tagaki with his hidden blade strike quickly following up with his Stormbreaker finisher.

Ospreay is not the first British born superstar to win the New Japan Cup, with Zack Sabre Jr taking that honour in 2018, the two Brits would actually clash along Ospreay’s route to the final, picking up up victories over Hiroyoshi Tenzen, SANDA and David Finlay. Ospreay nearly had to pull out of the tournament after he broke his nose in his match against Zack Sabre Jr but Ospreay refused to heed doctors advice buy continuing on in the tournament.

Ospreay will now go on to face current IWGP Heavyweight champion Kota Ibushi for the Championship at Sakura Genesis on the 29th of March. Ospreay invited the champion into the ring following his victory, where he would tell Ibushi that he is focussed on proving that he is best wrestler in the world and to do that he must take the belt from him. Ospreay would go on to say that there is nothing he loves more than proving he is the greatest wrestler and to prove this to Ibushi and the fans by hitting a cutter on his partner of 5 years, Bea Priestly, leaving a stunned crowd as he headed to the back leaving Ibushi to care for Priestley in the ring.

This will not be the first time Ospreay and Ibushi have clashed, much like Tagaki, Ospreay has a long and storied history with the current heavyweight champion. Most recently the two clashed at Wrestle Kingdom 13, opening the show, where Ospreay would defeat Ibushi for the Never open weight championship and putting Ibushi on the injury shelf for a number of months.

Who will come out on top when the two clash at Sakura Genesis? Will Ospreay be able to get better of his rival once more? Or can Ibushi rise to occasion and over come yet another of his rivals?
