Famous Training School And Promotion The Monster Factory Announces Mandatory Background Checks

Independent wrestling is dealing with the shock that Synergy Pro owner and promoter Patrick Shea has been hiding the fact he is a registered sex offender. Shea, also known as Colin West, is listed in New Jersey’s registry for sexually assaulting three minors between the age of 6 and 12 dating back to 1999.

Incidents like this have opened up a talk about accountability in independent wrestling, as many people are wondering how to have proper regulation in an industry that’s often times known for being shady and carny like than having any actual organization or regulations. Now one independent promotion is stepping up and going on record to take steps to prevent people like Shea aren’t on their shows in any capacity.

Dan McDonald, known professionally as Danny Cage runs the Monster Factory pro wrestling school and the promotion as well. Besides announcing the Monster Factory had severed ties with Synergy Wrestling, Cage also tweeted that despite the fact it could cost them business, full background checks will be conducted on anyone renting their building for events, in addition to anyone affiliated with events. From students to workers, to anyone doing work in any capacity for the school or their shows, Cage is willing to lose money and business at the cost of protecting the people who are working for him.

It’s a bold announcement, but it could be the kind of thing needed for independent wrestling. The Monster Factory is one of pro wrestling’s most well known schools in the world. Cage has been a guest trainer at the WWE Performance Center, and their alumni includes talent like Damian Priest, Sheamus, Matt Riddle, and Raven. The school opened in 1983 with Larry Sharpe & Buddy Rogers as the initial trainers, with Sharpe becoming full owner in 1986.
