WALTER Says Title Defenses Lose Value The More Often They Happen

The WWE United Kingdom Championship has only had three holders, and two of them have had some pretty long reigns. WALTER recently surpassed Pete Dunne’s record rign, now currently at 686 days.

However, WALTER’s reign has only seen 7 defenses of the belt, the most recent one coming on the January 14th, 2021 edition to NXT: UK when he defended against A-Kid. While the COVID-19 pandemic has no doubt helped his reign some thanks to a lack of events, WALTER feels it’s not about how often you defend the title. The current United Kingdom Champion believes it’s about quality over quantity. Speaking with SportBIBLE in an interview that took place before the A-Kid defense, he talked about how it’s important that each title defense feels far more special if it hase a big build up so they all have a special feel.

“These days championship matches lose a little bit of value because they happen so often. I like when championships are defended, I don’t know, three or four times a year. It’s the main title with a big buildup. That’s the big happening. That’s what keeps it special. There hasn’t been 15 or 20 title matches in that in that time span. So then that helped make each and every match I had stand out. When I won the title against Pete (Dunne), then defending against Tyler (Bate) in Cardiff. Then the one with Ilja Dragunov, which has been the most recent one. I think all those matches stood out for themselves. Each for their own. It’s been a different story and a different experience for the fans every time. Especially the one with Ilja, that was something new that nobody has ever seen before.”

WALTER has yet to start the build for his next defense since the A-Kid victory, but you can be assured the next defense will mean something when it happens.
