When WWE wound up having two top independent stars in their developmental camp FCW at one point, fans got excited. The potential of them alone was big enough, but to have both meant WWE could have invigorated their tag team division with their famous tag team. It was never meant to be.
While FCW was the main developmental territory, WWE had both Cesaro and Kassius Ohno under contract. As Claudio Castagnoli and Chris Hero, the duo known as the Kings of Wrestling had been tag team partners across the indy scene and champions in several promotions. However, despite having a talented team under their umbrella, the company had zero interest in using them as a team.
Chris Hero talked about this with Inside The Ropes, and he revealed that Triple H had told them the WWE had no intention of reuniting the Kings of Wrestling in the WWE.
“No, there was not. When Cesaro and I had our tryout and Triple H pulled us aside and he kind of gave us an idea that they would be offering us a contract, one of the first things he said was, ‘This is not to bring you guys in as a team. This is to bring you guys in separately and develop you separately. Whatever happens down the road happens but this is not, hey, you guys are being signed as a team.’ So I never had any thoughts or hopes that somebody would see something. Cesaro also got maybe like a five-month head start down in FCW. So by the time I got in and was doing stuff, he was getting ready to go up to the main roster, so I did not spend a lot of time in developmental with him.”
Fans of the Kings of Wrestling were treated to a one night reunion at a NXT house show in 2018, but there were never plans for them to be a long term team. WWE’s handling of tag teams probably means there are some fans out there who read this and feel better that they didn’t see the KoW in the WWE. However, while Ohno remained in NXT as a constant fixture until his release, Cesaro looks to be on the best run of his WWE career as he attempts to win the Elimination Chamber this Sunday night.
