Darby Allin Talks About How Bitter The Independent Wrestling Scene Made Him

The creation of All Elite Wrestling opened a lot of doors for talent. One of the things that it gave some of them was an outlet they hadn’t had before. A lot of their talent has taken the opportunity to not have one of those full creative teams and the creative freedom they’ve been given to really shine, and one of those stars is Darby Allin.

The current TNT Champion has utilized his own background in filmmaking to create interesting vignettes as he continues to build and establish a character in ways not many others do, and it’s taken him to places he couldn’t even reach on the independent wrestling scene. Talking to the Total Slam podcast, Allin revealed that his time on the indies had left him bitter, wondering if he’d ever rise above being the second match on the card.

“It feels amazing. When I first stepped into AEW and I saw what they had to offer, in my mind I thought I was the poster child of creative freedom. You’ll give me creative freedom and I will show everything I can do here and not elsewhere. They realized it with all my videos and how I put matches together and it feels really good and that I belong in that spot.”

“I was bitter and angry on my independent run because I was a second match card guy and saw the main eventers, and in my mind, I thought there is no reason why I can’t be there. I’m just not taken seriously like I want to be taken. If you give me the opportunity like I did with Cody or with Cage, and I can show everybody that if you give me the ball, you will never get it back.”

Allin wound up channeling that bitterness into working hard to make his AEW run matter. Now he’s no longer a second match guy but one of the stars of AEW and the face of TNT. You can watch the interview below.
