Rich Swann Discusses Having To Prepare For His Comeback During The COVID-19 Pandemic

In 2019, Rich Swann suffered an injury that sidelined him for over a year. While originally just said a knee injury, the reality was far worse than the report. It was eventually revealed the injury was over multiple parts of his leg and they were all career threatening.

Since his return, however, Swann has been on fire. The current Impact Wrestling World Champion has been wrestling in the same style that made him popular with the fans and is looking to headline one of the biggest pay per views in Impact history. While hardly one of their more well known pay per view names, Swann knows all eyes are on this pay per view as he and the Motor City Machine Guns take on Kenny Omega and the Good Brothers in a six-man tag team match. Swann knows this is an opportunity to do great things he almost didn’t have.

Swann had a chance to talk to James Walsh from the Wrestling Epicenter podcast, revealing the extent of those injuries he suffered along with how hard he had to work to come back not just from the difficult injuries, but having to do it all in the middle of a pandemic.

“You know, it was excruciating, it was painful, it was something that I wouldn’t ever wish on my worst enemy. I broke my leg, my fibula, my ankle… Everything in my ankle, my foot… And then, not only that, my back. My lower back was broken. You know, I was told that I probably would never wrestle again let alone walk the same way again. That was just another something that I had to overcome. So, when the opportunity came to me and the doctor said I was cleared and ready to go – After all the physical therapy I had to do… Quarantine was the thing. So, people couldn’t go to the store and only one member of the household could go. Doctors offices were closed, hospitals were paying attention to COVID. So, you know. At that time, Doctors were giving me the physical therapy to do at home and I was doing them on my own with no physical trainers. Then, when things opened back up, the Doctors said, “I can tell you’ve been working very hard. Why don’t you try going back and do what you love?” I did! And, once that opportunity arose, you now see where I am today!”

Swann also addresses the AEW/Impact Wrestling partnership, working with the Motor City Machine Guns, facing Kenny Omega in a unification match, and more. You can watch the interview below.
