Brodie Lee Personally Requested His Health Status Be Kept Quiet

Brodie Lee’s death was a shock to everyone when it was announced on Saturday. Though Lee had not been seen on AEW television since October, nobody knew anything about The Exalted One’s status outside a handful of people. AEW had kept his condition a close company secret, and it was by design because it was at Lee’s request.

Dave Meltzer talked a lot more about Lee’s passing on Wrestling Observer Radio, and revealed that Lee personally requested nobody release information about his illness because he didn’t want the publiclity. More importantly, Lee didn’t want anyone taking photos of him in the hospital bed.

“He, Jon [Brodie Lee] didn’t want the publicity. He certainly didn’t want any photos of him in that condition, but he did not want the publicity.”

The company honored Lee and his family’s wishes, and kept it quiet until his passing, though it was probably unavoidable at that point. As more and more information comes out about Lee’s condition in his final days, it becomes more and more understandable why it was asked to be kept quiet and sheds more light how it now seems to be why it seemed he passed so suddenly. His family no doubt wants to keep as little information as possible to get out even now, and we as a community should respect those wishes.
