News And Notes From Tuesday’s AEW Media Call

AEW and Tony Khan hosted a media call in advance of tomorrow night’s huge “Winter Is Coming” episode of Dynamite, and while one of the biggest news bits to come out of the call was the optimism of the arrival of trios titles for AEW, there was still a lot of interesting tidbits to come out of the call. Here are just some of the brief highlights as follows.

  • Tony Khan didn’t comment about Brodie Lee’s status, saying he can’t comment about him “not being here,” but he did say he was excited to have him back with them “soon, I hope.” Khan also referred to Lee as one of their top wrestlers.
  • Khan was asked bout the amount of talent they’ve signed and how much more he could add without eventually detracting from the roster. He did say that he has made the decision to not release anyone during the pandemic, especially because he realizes it’s a hard time to get a job in pro wrestling right now. He did, however, say thare are cuts he “could have and should have made.”
  • Related to this, he brought up the topic of AEW Dark and says the show has become quite valuable, mentioning the idea of splitting it into two different shows. One would feature more established talent and one with more developmental stars. He referenced Will Hobbs as someone who has benefited from the show and said it was more important to develop talent instead of cutting them.
  • Khan mentioned that he’s never watched Game of Thrones but he thought the title was perfect because it has an epic meaning. He did say his mother was a fan of the show and he felt that it would be an awesome name and it felt right for a big event. He did say that given their partnership with WarnerMedia, they gave him permission to use the title.
  • He said AEW is planning a big Christmas event, a big New Year’s event, and Beach Break.

Khan had lots more to say and some of it we will be reporting on shortly.
