The Undertaker has had many legendary encounters at WrestleMania, but one that stands out is his WrestleMania 18 showdown with Ric Flair. One icon of WWE meeting one icon from the days of WCW.
It was a match that almost didn’t happen.
On his second appearance on The Broken Skull Sessions, Undertaker recalls how during that year Vince had not started the build for a match involving The Undertaker, and how when he started working to put Big Evil on the card, he gave him a choice of opponents. Given the two, Undertaker didn’t hesitate between Flair and the other choice.
“Going into that year, I remember Vince pulling me into the office at a tv and he goes Mark, I’m so sorry, I haven’t got you figured into Mania, right? To Mania. And I was like yeah, I kinda noticed right? Everyone’s deep into their builds already, right? And he goes, I mean I got two guys, I got two guys for ya know? I got RVD and I got Flair. and I don’t think he got Flair all the way out before I said Flair. And he was shocked, right? Vince was shocked, because he thought I was gonna go with the younger, y’know, the guy, and RVD was on his way up and you know he was doing good things. but it was like, I wanna work with Flair. And he was still trying to like, you don’t wanna work with RVD? I said nah, I got plenty of time to work with RVD, I wanna work with Flair.”
Undertaker went on to say that McMahon seemed surprised mostly because Undertaker felt McMahon didn’t have the same reverence and respect for Flair he did and others that had been around wrestling outside the WWE had.
While everyone will remember that WrestleMania for the other Icon vs. Icon match involving Hulk Hogan and The Rock, others will remember that match in particular, the one that started the WWE recognizing The Streak. And if Vince didn’t leave it down specifically for Undertaker to make his choice, we may have seen him take on Rob Van Dam.
