NXT Trying “A New Formula” In Their Booking

Last night’s NXT featured the shocking moment of Leon Ruff defeating Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Title, albeit with some help from Damien Preist. It was a big shock on the show, especially considering NXT is not a brand known for short title reigns.

Earlier, we posted about NXT having no long term plan for Leon Ruff’s push, and on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer continued on to say that NXT might be trying something new.

“For a company that’s really treated its champions well, the fact that they’re doing this tells me that they’re trying to find a new formula I guess is the best way to put it. I mean it’s easy to look at this and do something with it that’s more, you know to elevate somebody long term that’s more viable. I mean are they going to have Leon Ruff fluke his way [to the top]?”

NXT has been struggling to defeat AEW in the ratings, so shock moves like this could be by design to help lift the ratings. With no long term plan for Ruff, we have to wait and see what happens next for the North American Title and if they use this as a springboard for Ruff to become a new star on the brand.
