Why Scorpio Sky Doesn’t Use His MMA Background In AEW

Scorpio Sky has become a major breakout act since the start of All Elite Wrestling. The nearly two decade long pro is a former AEW Tag Team Champion and has challenged for the AEW World Title and TNT Title, making him one of their featured acts.

With a career that long, Sky has had to change up his wrestling style to stay fresh. This included removing a mixed martial arts influence from his wrestling style, something he has a background in. Sky had competed in a handful of MMA matches from 2011-2015, with a professional record of 2-1. Speaking to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, he talks about why you don’t see that influence in his work.

“Even before I fought, I was always a fan of mixed martial arts. Whether it was leg kicks, certain types of strikes or evading strikes. Even in 2003, I was using a triangle choke as a finishing move. People didn’t even know what the triangle choke was back then,” Sky said, explaining that a few times he’d actually show announcers how it worked. “Muay thai knee strikes, and other knee strikes. I’ve kind of gotten away from it because everyone is doing it. You see triangle chokes and head kicks, and knee strikes specifically. Everybody’s doing knee strikes.”

Among other topics discussed in the interview is why you don’t see him doing as many dives as he used to and how a former PWG star helped influence his career. You can watch the interview below.
