Khamzat Chimaev Wants Stephen Thompson And The Twisted Web at 145

Undefeated and highly confident prospect Khamzat Chimaev, who has already fought 3 times this year, apparently wants more. He recently chimes in on twitter to call out a fellow Welterweight (follow me here) who has already been trying to get a Fight with another Welterweight, who already wants another Welterweight…..

If you believe Chimaev, who’s been saying for at least a month he wants a top 10 opponent, Dana White must be on board with a possible fight against Thompson. However, Thompson has recently been campaigning to fight number 3 contender Leon Edwards. Problem is Leon Edwards doesn’t want any part of either man and is doing his own campaigning for a different fight, Edwards wants Burns

Recently Leon Edwards was critical of fighting Thompson or Chimaev

Edwards comments then start a little war of words back and forth on twitter between he and Stephen Thompson

While Edwards isn’t wrong here because Stephen hasn’t had a win of note since 2017 and Khamzat hasn’t beaten anyone, the problem for me is Leon Edwards himself. With all due respect, Edwards doesn’t exactly move the rating needle. It’s been 6 years since he lost to current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and he’s only been in headlines the past 2 years trying to secure a fight with Jorge Masvidal. It also doesn’t help that while effective, as shown by his ranking, Leon’s style isn’t very fan friendly. That doesn’t lower Leon Edwards confidence one bit

Circling back To Khamzat Chimaev, he just wants to fight anyone at any time.

Leon Edwards wasn’t wrong when saying Khamzat hasn’t faced anyone but at 9-0 with all his wins coming by stoppage (6 by KO 3 by submission) he certainly raises eyebrows. He’s fought 3 times in the last 3 months and is eager for more. In a recent MMA Junkie article Chimaev may have someone willing to step up, MMA Veteran Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira stated he would take the fight “No one else wanted”.

All of this Twitter Talk in the Welterweight division comes on the heels of Champion Kamaru Usman pulling out of his fight against Gilbert Burns on December 12th, leaving a huge hole in the Main Event spot for UFC 256.

Dana White did state Khamzat Chimaev has signed a deal for a 5 round main event so maybe he will get what he’s after? Maybe Leon Edwards will step in to face Gilbert Burns for the right be Usman’s next opponent? Maybe Edwards caves and Fights Chimaev? Unfortunately, I think Stephen Thompson is out of luck to get another main event spot but you just never know. Maybe no one mentioned ends up in the main event at all, who knows?! I guess we will all have to pay attention over the next few weeks to see who will end up with the top spot on PPV
