MMA legend and former WWF Intercontinental Champion Ken Shamrock has said that a one-on-one match with Kurt Angle could happen, but it would be “up to Kurt”.
In a recent interview with the Dropkick Podcast, Shamrock said:
“I have always entertained the idea for me and him to have a match, but again I have the utmost respect for Kurt. I’m honored that he took that hold (Ankle Lock) that I Invented – along with everyone else, right? I’m honored that they have been able to make that hold even more famous. That’s never been an issue and I’ve expressed that to him when we’ve talked.”
Shamrock, 56, was a one time Intercontinental champion, winner of the 1998 King of the Ring tournament and a tag team champion with the Big Boss Man during his two-year tenure in the WWF.
He left the company in September 1999, while Kurt Angle debuted at the Survivor Series in November of the same year.
Comparisons between Angle, 51, and Shamrock were perhaps inevitable – especially with both men using the Ankle Lock submission as a finisher.
Like Shamrock, Angle also won the King of the Ring tournament, defeating Rikishi in the KoTR final in 2000. He also held the tag team championships with partner Chris Benoit and was a one time Intercontinental champion. Angle would go on to eclipse Shamrock in WWF / WWE championship reigns, however, also securing runs as WCW Champion, WCW United States Champion, four reigns as WWF/WWE World Heavyweight Champion, European Champion and Hardcore champion with the company.
Angle was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.
Shamrock added:
“Give the fans what they want, I know the fans want to see it. I know I want, I know Kurt wants it. It’s whether or not he’s physically capable of being able to put in the training to be able to come in and do that match.”
