Tony Khan announced last week on the Stone Cold Podcast that All Elite Wrestling will crown their first Tag Team champions via tournament when they go on TV later this year. While we don’t know the full extent of the tournament, you would think that champions would be either one of three teams. The Young Bucks, SCU or the Best Friends.
Favorite #1: The Young Bucks
Obviously, the Young Bucks should be a favorite. Not only are they EVPs of All Elite Wrestling, but they are regarded by many as the best tag team in the world. However, they could receive some backlash from fans for booking themselves over everybody. A huge reason people like to look at as the reason WCW fell in the late 90s and early 00s during the Monday Night Wars was due to creative control.
Favorite #2: SCU
SCU makes a lot of sense as well as they are hugely over in the wrestling industry thanks to their “Worst Town I’ve Ever Been In” and “Trevor and Arthur” segments on Being the Elite. This could be a safe bet as well as the first tag team champions. While Christopher Daniels does have a backstage role, but he certainly isn’t an EVP and you can use Scopio Sky and Frankie Kazarian for most of , if not, all of the tournament.
Favorite #3: The Best Friends
The other possible favorite is The Best Friends, Chuckie T and Trent Baretta. The first AEW signing for the Tag Team division, the former ROH and NJPW tag team seemed to be destined for a huge spot in the tag team division from the get-go. They will be in the tag team match at Fyter Fest that will determine which team will be in the first round bye qualifying match. They could be given a lot of credibility by being the first round bye team, or actually winning the tournament.
Now because we don’t know the full bracket yet, there still some dark horses that could end up winning. One of those dark horses are the Dark Order, fka The Super Smash Bros. A lot of people want to put stock into Private Party as well. We could all be swerved and the Rhodes brothers might win. As we get more information on this, we will definitely be talking about it on the Squared Circle Psychobabble.
