Former WWE Superstar Shawn Spears Officially Signs With AEW

AEW officially announced earlier today the signing of former WWE Superstar Tye Dillinger, now going by the ring name Shawn Spears, to the company.

Spears competed at AEW’s Double or Nothing event last month when he participated in the Casino Battle Royale as part of the “Buy In” pre-show.

You can see AEW’s tweet announcing the signing of Shawn Spears to the company below.

The news of Spears signing isn’t much of a shock, as his close friendship with Cody Rhodes has been well documented. Spears, who is 38 years old, began wrestling professionally back in 2002. Spears signed with the WWE back in 2006 before being released from the company in 2009.

Spears spent the next few years working the independent circuit before re-signing with WWE in September of 2013. He was assigned to NXT where he spent the few years competing before eventually being called up to the main roster as a surprise entrant in the 2017 Royal Rumble. It was reported earlier this year that he had requested his release from the company, and was granted his release in February (2019).
