Is Ric Flair The Best?

Over the years there have been many great wrestlers that have been a part of the WWE. While each wrestler seems to have left their own mark on the sport. Despite the number of wrestlers who have been in the ring, perhaps no one as much as Ric Flair. Given his influence, it begs the question: is Ric Flair the best WWE athlete of all time?

With his platinum blond hair and eccentric personality, Ric Flair was one of the top wrestlers of the 80’s and 90’s. Flair quickly rose to prominence with the tutelage of wrestling greats and in the end surpassing the success of his mentors. Sure he was their lackeys for a while helping them with their gear and other needs but doing so, Flair learned from the best of the sport and was later able to emulate this in his career. Flair was absolutely brilliant at talking smack about his opponents when granting interviews on the show. WWE fans understand that these chats brought a whole other dimension to the show. Flair was able to give the fans what they wanted and could get fans in a frenzy just by taking the mic. He has many quotes attributed to him including “To be the man, you have to beat the man”.

Along with his personality, Flair also had his own style of wrestling. For instance, he made the figure-4 his iconic wrestling move. Sure others also used it but Flair brought it to the forefront and helped to make it more recognisable to audience members. It also created a lot of excitement within the audience who would stand to cheer on their favourite to escape. Also his costume choice just added to the persona he created for himself donning very extravagant robes with feathers and rhinestones.

Ric Flair has also garnered a multitude of accolades. Over the years he has earned a confirmed 16 World Championships even though he likes to boast a few more. He also had the distinction of being the first active athlete to receive induction in the WWE Hall of Fame, later earning a second induction. He had some momentous victories over his career including his first where he endured an hour in ring before pulling out a win. Flair’s career is characterized by consistency with numerous wins. Strutting into the ring even in his 60’s showed Flair’s skills didn’t diminish with age.

In the end, when it comes down to determining where WWE wrestlers fall in comparison to one another, probably the best people to weigh in on this conundrum would be the fans themselves. Regardless of whether he’s at the top, one thing is for sure Ric Flair is definitely one of the greatest WWE wrestlers of all time.
