Update On Chris Jericho’s Status With New Japan Pro Wrestling

Chris Jericho has had a good run with New Japan over the last year or so, as he worked a program with Kenny Omega that resulted in their match last year at Wrestle Kingdom 12.

Everyone thought last year that Jericho was finished with the company after his match with Omega, only or Jericho to show up the following day at New Years Dash where he attacked Tetsuya Naito setting up their program which culminated with their match last weekend at Wrestle Kingdom 13.

Jericho dropped the IWGP Intercontinental Title to Tetsuya Naito at Wrestle Kingdom 13, and once again his future with the company was unknown. Jericho once again threw a curveball following the event, as he issued a challenge to Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

Chris Jericho’s status with NJPW was discussed on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, and Dave Meltzer shed some light on Jericho’s current deal with New Japan and potential plans going forward.

“I know Chris Jericho’s deal expired with the Tokyo Dome, but in the dressing room he challenged Hiroshi Tanahashi and they do wanna do that match this year, Tanahashi and Jericho and Jericho does wanna stay it’s just a question of getting a new deal done so that’s sort of that situation.”

Meltzer also made note that this is the current situation surrounding Jericho, but that it could change. Meltzer said, “I’m sure it could be changing a lot.”
