Update On Reason WWE Is Holding World Cup Tournament In Saudi Arabia

WWE will be reportedly still be holding their Crown Jewel event on November 2nd from Saudi Arabia. The event will also be home to the first annual WWE World Cup Tournament.

It has also been reported that if by chance WWE moved or cancelled the upcoming Crown Jewel PPV that the WWE World Cup Tournament would not be moved with it, and that the tournament would remain part of the next event in Saudi Arabia.

On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed why WWE has locked this tournament into the Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia. The reason why the tournament is being reserved for Saudi Arabia is rather petty and somewhere interesting. Meltzer said that the reason WWE is having a “world cup tournament” in Saudi Arabia is because Qatar has been awarded the World Cup of Soccer, and that since Qatar is an enemy of Saudi Arabia and they didn’t get the soccer world cup, they decided to create their own World Cup with WWE.

Regarding the WWE World Cup Tournament, Meltzer said:

“You know why it’s called the ‘World Cup,’ right? So Qatar got the World Cup and Qatar is Saudi Arabia’s enemy so they wanted a World Cup and since they couldn’t get the soccer World Cup they decided to create their own World Cup with WWE.”
